Effectively and safely managing chronic pain conditions in the United States has become more complex and challenging when taking into account the associated pressing problem with opioid prescribing. Evidence does not support the use of opioids for chronic non-cancer pain. Clinicians who wish to help their patients with chronic pain in an evidence-based manner may find that this endeavor requires a set of skills that were not highlighted in medical school or residency training.
This system transforms the care model for chronic pain by providing skills for the clinical team that allow members to guide, coach and assist patients with day-to-day self-management of pain. It also has the potential to address clinician burnout and its associated opioid epidemic.
